Newsflash Formula Student Germany

Dear friends, dear supporters and dear fans!

We are back with a new update from the competition period of EDGE15.

One week Formula Student Germany

On Sunday, August 11, the time had come and we set off on the long journey to the Hockenheimring. Not only was the biggest event for electric and driverless cars in the world waiting for us there, but also 78 other international teams. The atmosphere was full of anticipation, but also excitement, as the days and nights leading up to the event were spent giving everything to see the EDGE15 drive on FSG. Spoiler: It was worth it! But more on that later!

As you probably already know, all FS competitions start the same way, namely with setting up the privat tents and the team tent. Fortunately, it wasn't our first competition, so we had everything set up and ready in no time at all and could concentrate all the more on the EDGE and its preparation for the scrutineerings.

We started immediately the next day. As soon as we arrived, we had to attend the first acceptance tests: the accumulator scrutineering and the mechanical scrutineering. Unfortunately, something in the driverless technology broke at the last moment, which meant that we were unable to use our driverless system. Nevertheless, we are very proud to have taken part in an official competition with a driverless system for the first time in the history of TU Wien Racing! This success gives us momentum and motivation to further develop the system next season. We were also able to move into and set up our pit at the Ring. The day was rounded off with all the other teams at the Opening Ceremony.

However, we were not allowed to celebrate for too long, as the next day was full of further scrutinies and the first presentations. Starting with the pre-inspection and the driver egress and then continuing with the electronic inspection.

But what actually happens in the camp in the meantime? Not to forget our hard-working crew, who provide the whole team with freshly cooked food and clean dishes every day. The camp crew's day usually starts a little later than that of the pit crew. At the morning briefing, everyone is assigned to their respective tasks before the work begins. In addition to cooking and washing up, tasks such as filling our water canisters and setting up our pool are also on the agenda.

Tuesday morning was just as packed with the brake, tilt and rain tests, which we all passed successfully. This meant that nothing stood in our way of getting the EDGE onto the race track the next day. Not to forget, of course, the Business Plan and the Cost Report, with which we took 5th place and 8th place in Engineering Design out of a total of 79 teams! The day was rounded off with an official team photo, which of course should not be missed.

But now it's time for the dynamic disciplines: Skidpad, Acceleration, Autocross and Endurance. We started on the race track with the Skidpad discipline. Here we were able to complete all the laps and, despite a technical error that meant we only drove with two engines, we achieved a best time of 5.32 seconds. On the same day, we also competed in acceleration. Our fastest time here was 3.61 seconds. In the Autocross, we achieved a time of 81.19 seconds.

Unfortunately, we had to abandon our run in the Endurance after an electrical fault caused by the rain and were therefore unable to complete this discipline. Nevertheless, we are very proud to have competed in all the other manual disciplines and to have done well! We were then able to celebrate a perfect end to the week in grand style at the Award Ceremony on Sunday evening!
